Sport, Pet and Fringe turf use a 3 × 4-inch drainage pattern. Envirofill with Microban is applied at 2–3 pounds per square foot.

01Where can I install synthetic turf?

Synthetic turf works for almost any yard, daycare, dog-boarding facility, veterinary space, rooftop, pool surround and more. It eliminates mud, reduces maintenance and gives kids and pets a space to enjoy year-round. We also design and install putting greens, with no project too big or too small.

02Is it durable?

Yes. With proper maintenance and cleaning, synthetic turf will look great and resist fading for more than 10 years.

03What maintenance and care are involved?

Rinse with water and remove organic debris as needed. At least once a year, we recommend raking or brooming the turf to lift wear patterns and adding infill when needed.

04Does water or urine drain through it?

Yes. Water and urine readily drain through synthetic turf—faster than natural sod—so puddles do not linger, even after heavy rain.

05What do you use for infill?

We use Envirofill with Microban, an antimicrobial infill that helps resist odors and bacterial growth while adding weight and stability to the turf.

06How much does synthetic turf cost?

Projects start at $14 per square foot, including preparation, materials and installation. Final pricing varies with site access and project needs, so we provide a complimentary quote for an accurate total.

Follow these steps in order to give fresh sod the firm soil contact, moisture and early care it needs to establish well.

The simple formula

Clear → Loosen → Grade → Lay → Roll → Water → Establish

  1. 01

    Remove the Old Lawn

    Remove existing grass, weeds, roots, rocks, and debris. The area should be completely cleared before installing new sod.

  2. 02

    Loosen the Soil

    Till or loosen the top 3–4 inches of soil. Break up compacted areas so the new roots can establish quickly.

  3. 03

    Improve the Soil if Needed

    Add quality topsoil or compost if the existing soil is poor, heavily compacted, or uneven. Mix it into the existing soil rather than leaving a thick loose layer on top.

  4. 04

    Grade the Area

    Rake the soil smooth and level. Grade it slightly away from your home and buildings so water drains properly. The finished soil should sit about 1 inch below sidewalks, patios, and driveways.

    Lightly Firm the Soil

    Walk over or lightly roll the prepared area to settle the soil. Fill any low spots and rake again. The surface should be firm but not hard or compacted.

  6. 06

    Lightly Water Before Installation

    The soil should be slightly moist, not muddy, when the sod is installed. Avoid laying sod onto extremely dry ground.

  7. 07

    Install Sod Immediately

    Sod is perishable. Install it as soon as possible after pickup or delivery, preferably the same day. Do not leave rolled sod sitting in the sun.

  8. 08

    Start Along a Straight Edge

    Begin along a driveway, sidewalk, or other straight edge. Lay each piece tightly against the next without overlapping or leaving gaps.

  9. 09

    Stagger the Seams

    Install sod in a brick-like pattern so the seams do not line up. This helps prevent gaps and creates a stronger lawn.

  10. 10

    Cut Sod to Fit

    Use a sharp knife or sod knife to trim around landscaping, sidewalks, trees, and other obstacles. Avoid stretching pieces to make them fit.

  11. 11

    Roll the New Sod

    After installation, lightly roll the lawn to press the sod firmly against the soil and remove air pockets between the roots and ground.

  12. 12

    Water Immediately

    Begin watering as soon as an area is installed. The sod and the soil underneath should be thoroughly wet.

  13. 13

    Keep It Moist While It Roots

    For approximately the first 1–2 weeks, keep the sod consistently moist. During hot or dry weather, this may require watering multiple times per day. Avoid allowing the sod to dry out.

  14. 14

    Reduce Watering After Rooting

    Once the sod begins rooting firmly into the soil, gradually reduce watering frequency and begin watering more deeply.

  15. 15

    Wait Before Mowing

    Mow once the sod has rooted and reached roughly 3–4 inches tall. Make sure the ground is firm enough that your mower will not leave ruts. Never remove more than about one-third of the grass blade at one time.

Nearly all new-sod failures trace back to poor watering. Begin immediately, keep the soil consistently moist while roots develop, then transition to a sustainable care routine.

First ½ hour · Most important

Give new sod at least ½ inch of water within the first ½ hour after installation.

    Water Thoroughly from the Start

    Immediately after the first soaking, give the new turf ½ to 1 inch of water every day until it begins to root—normally about two weeks. Adjust the amount when rainfall, heat or other weather conditions change.

  2. 02

    Reduce Watering After Rooting

    After the first few weeks, scale back to watering once or twice per week while making sure the lawn has enough moisture to handle extended dry periods. Turf near driveways and buildings may need additional water because reflected heat can create extra stress.

  3. 03

    Protect the New Turf

    Moderate use is fine during the first few weeks, but avoid heavy or concentrated traffic. Too much activity before the roots establish can cause the sod to slip or develop tracking.

  4. 04

    Mow with Care

    Begin mowing about two weeks after installation. Maintain roughly 2½ inches in spring and fall and 3 inches in summer, and never remove more than one-third of the grass height at once. Leave clippings to return nitrogen and nutrients to the soil, keep mower blades sharp, avoid hard turns and do not mow when the lawn is wet.

    Maintain It Through the Seasons

    Continue regular fertilization and weed control. For lasting beauty and vigor, follow a sound regional lawn-care program or work with a professional lawn-care company.

Good seed needs good soil contact, steady moisture and patient early care. Follow these stages in order to help a new lawn establish evenly and stay healthy.

    Prepare the Soil

    Use a pointed shovel to remove old vegetation, rocks and debris. Start with a clean, loosened surface so seed can make direct contact with the soil.

  2. 02

    Spread Seed and Protect It

    Evenly spread seed at the recommended rate for new seeding or overseeding, then work it into the top ¼ inch of soil with a leaf rake or drag mat. Apply starter fertilizer at the package rate. Cover about 90% of the bare soil with a light layer of straw—one bale covers approximately 450 square feet. Leave the straw in place as the grass grows to protect the seed, limit erosion and retain moisture.

  3. 03

    Water Consistently

    Water lightly and often enough to keep the seed moist throughout germination, continuing through the first mowing. During extended dry periods, keep watering so the new grass does not go dormant.

  4. 04

    Make the First Cut Carefully

    Mow when the grass is at least 4 inches tall. Use the highest mower setting for the first cut, then maintain about 2½ inches in spring and fall and 3 inches in summer. Never remove more than one-third of the grass height at once. Leave clippings to recycle nutrients, keep blades sharp, avoid hard turns and do not mow when the lawn is wet.

    Maintain It Through the Seasons

    Continue regular fertilization and weed control. For the strongest long-term results, follow a sound seasonal lawn-care program suited to the Greater Cincinnati area or work with a professional lawn-care company.
