Firewood TIPS

Safe, Reliable Ways to Enjoy Your Hearth Fire

Motz Turf Farms has been providing premium firewood since 1952. Following a few basic guidelines will make it easier for you to sit back, relax, and enjoy your beautiful, roaring fire.

Stacking and Storage

If you store wood properly – off the ground, covered and away from moisture – it will continue to season. Stack your firewood where it is sheltered from winter storms and, preferably, exposed to the sun. Cover your outdoor woodpile with a tarp to keep it dry.

Building a Safer Fire

Before lighting your fire, make sure that the room is well ventilated, the fireplace damper is open, and the flue is unobstructed. It’s a good idea to periodically have the chimney cleaned and checked. Use a spark screen and keep it closed to protect your home and valuables from damage. Finally, keep an eye on young children at all times.

Building a Better Fire

Building a successful fire requires varying amounts of paper, kindling and patience. Of course the best fires start with the best wood – for example, Motz Turf Farms’ premium seasoned firewood. Next you need to create the proper surface to enhance combustion. One classic technique is to crumble paper and cover it tepee style with kindling and a few small logs. Our grate screens, made of steel lath and designed to fill the grate opening, keep the hot embers near the wood to increase heat and combustion. Hot coals and embers fall through the wide grates where they cool. Clean the ashes from the bottom of the grate, when they accumulate to one to two inches, since excess ash can inhibit the flow of air. Always make sure ashes are cool before you dispose of them properly in a metal container.
