Frequently Asked Questions About Turf

Do you sell sod to homeowners? What is the minimum order?

Yes! Sod is available for homeowners to purchase. There is no minimum order; you may purchase as little as one 21" x 42" sheet.

What are the advantages of sod vs. seeding?

Sod provides homeowners with a two-year head start in their goal of achieving a thick lawn. Its instant beauty and erosion prevention make it a natural choice for those not willing to spend a year or two starting from seed. We like to say seeding has its place – and that’s on our farm! We seed every fall when conditions are ideal. Our rich topsoil allows our customers to reap the benefits of turf grown to maturity and ready for harvest when their projects need it.

What is the best time of year for sod installation?

With good site preparation and adequate care, any time of the year is suitable. Naturally, summer’s heat will require a bit more water for new sod than spring or fall. Some large installations may require installation in stages to allow for thorough watering, for example the back yard, followed in a day or two by the front.

Is turf locally grown?

Yes, because it allows for harvest and installation on the same day. Fresh is best. Don’t hesitate to ask when your turf was harvested–we’ll be glad to keep you in the loop.

What is the best type of grass for this area?

Fescue sod requires less maintenance and care than bluegrass, and we proudly helped pioneer its introduction to this region. Motz Turf has a blend of 10-12% bluegrass and the remainder fescue. This combines the injury-recovering ability of bluegrass with the longevity of fescue, making for an attractive, durable lawn.

Frequently Asked
Questions About Synthetic Turf

What kind of maintenance does synthetic turf need?

You should clean debris away and rinse as needed, based on traffic and use. If you use a leaf blower, don’t move the nozzle close to the surface, as you may disturb the necessary infill.

Will water drain from synthetic turf?

Water actually drains more quickly through synthetic turf – and there’s never mud to worry about.

Why does my synthetic turf need infill?

A layer of infill does several things. It acts as a foundation for your synthetic turf, keeping the blades from being compressed and crushed so they’ll spring back up just like natural turf. Infill also adds weight and stability to your new lawn.

Is synthetic turf safe for pets?

Pets love synthetic turf! There’s nothing harmful for pets (or kids!), and “accidents” are actually easier to deal with.
