Turf Tips

Watering

Be sure to give your new sod 1/2" or more of water within the first 1/2 hour of installation. After that, the lawn should receive 1/2" to 1" of water every other day, until it is well rooted, which normally takes 10 to 14 days. Weather conditions may dictate modifications of these amounts, but the goal is to maintain adequate moisture during this critical rooting period.

After a couple of weeks, scale back on watering to just once or twice a week, making sure your lawn has enough moisture to survive extended dry periods. Remember that areas near driveways and buildings are more likely to show stress due to reflected heat and may require additional water.

During the first few weeks, avoid heavy or concentrated traffic on your new lawn, as this may cause slippage and tracking.

Mowing and Fertilizing

Your new lawn can be mowed within about two weeks of installation. Mow your lawn when it reaches a height of 2 1/2 inches in the spring and fall and a height of 3 inches in the summer. Remove no more than 1/3 of the grass height per mowing. Leave your clippings where they fall; it won’t create thatch buildup but will put nitrogen and nutrients back into the soil. Keep your mower blades sharp and avoid hard turns. Avoid mowing the lawn when it is wet, since this may cause ruts or damage to your new turf.

Maintain a regular program of fertilization and weed control. Motz Turf Farms recommends a maintenance program based on sound professional practices.
